Saturday May 21
On this first day of service with Mother Teresa's, early this morning, we scattered to four different homes with other volunteers from around the globe-- Italy, Spain, China, Australia and Tennesee included. Everyone has a different reason for coming here.
Most of us were baptized into the volunteer experience by plunging our arms into basins of soapy water where we scrubbed and dunked the soiled clothing and sheets of hundreds of residents. The sisters adhere to simplicity in how they run the homes and there is a certain meditative element to the day's rhythm.
At kalighat, a hospice home for those with illness, we went from washing and hanging the wash, tending to the personal needs of patients with backscratchers and hand holding, dishing out lunch, feeding those who could not manage on their own and helping them settle into their designated cots among the 60 plus in the room. Wash the dishes, take down the dry clothes and take a last glimpse at the sleeping faces of the people who graciously allowed us into their world.
